We’ve had some interesting posts on our Facebook page recently.  It seems there are plenty of Brabantia products which have been around for a long time!  We’ve been designing and making solid goods since 1919, so it’s interesting to see how they’ve changed and lasted over the years.

Any idea what this is?  Wim de Meirsman was stumped until Bart van Elderen showed us the one below.  It’s a toilet roll holder with a mirror

Bart dated this pre-1970s  due to the house logo, which was before our current ‘solid’ one.

This is Bart’s – a toilet-roll holder with integrated air-freshener.

This looks a little more familiar. Dated circa ’65-’70, this canister is still ‘holding out’ as Miranda Van Boven’s sugar holder.

This week we are delighted to hear from our second Best MAD Food Blog finalist Dan Toombs a.k.a The Curry Guy, who has reviewed our Brabantia Clear Top Canisters.

His mouth-watering blog is a collection of traditional Indian, Pakistani and Bangladeshi recipes.  Born and raised in California Dan was introduced to great food at a young age, his grandfather passed down all of the family recipes while he was growing up and so began his love of cooking. He’s been using our  Clear Top Canisters to store his spices, so let’s see what he thinks:

“I’m often asked which spices are essential for good British Indian Restaurant (BIR) style cooking. Indian curry house cooking is different to more authentic styles in that it was adapted to make great tasting meals fast in a busy restaurant.

I have about every spice going in my spice larder but there are a few spices/ spices mixes (masalas) I use all the time. These are the spices I keep topped up for quick meals after work. They are the spices you will need to have on hand if you are interested in perfecting your BIR cooking skills.

Not everyone cooks as much BIR meals as I do at home so you may wish to prepare the spices in small amounts so that your meals taste exciting and fresh.

I also recommend sourcing an Indian spice container – such as a spice dabbas or perhaps something more modern like the nifty air-tight stainless steel spice jars that were sent to me by my friends at Brabantia. I love these containers and highly recommend them if you are using spices often.”

Thinking about all we love about the summer, one of our favourite things has to be embracing a more informal way of eating. BBQs, picnics, sharing platters – all alfresco with delicious fresh ingredients and a great big dollop of sunshine.

So, here’s a few of our easy summer recipes that we hope will become family favourites.

Scotch Egg Recipe

If you’re packing up a picnic, why not make a contemporary twist on everyone’s favourite – the humble scotch egg. Guaranteed to surprise and delight, these thai-spiced scotch eggs are not only easy to make, but chicken’s eggs can be replaced with quail’s eggs for a more dainty and genteel version. Delish.

Yummy Gazpacho

Something else your fellow picnickers won’t be expecting is a yummy gazpacho shot. Perfect for a hot sunny day, this refreshingly chilled soup-cum-cocktail tastes even better if it’s made from tomatoes harvested from your own garden.

Sea Food Sharing Platter 

We reckon there’s something special about sharing a platter with friends. This summer, forget the traditional cheese or charcuterie board and go fishy, with a tasty mix of smoked salmon, mackerel, and trout. The spiced cucumber salad with this recipe, courtesy of BBC Good Food, is a fantastic accompaniment, cutting through the richness of all this beautiful fish. An easy summer recipe and one to be enjoyed when looking out to sea.

Tasty BBQ Sardines

Keeping on a fishy theme, why not make Rick Stein’s tasty sardines the star turn of your next BBQ?

Packed full of flavour, sardines are sustainable and a great alternative more expensive fish. When marinated as Rick suggests with lemon zest, rosemary, garlic, olives and capers, these will have everyone coming back for more.

Subtle Elderflower Cheesecake 

And then for a summer desert. This was really hard to choose, so we’ve opted for two: a deliciously subtle elderflower cheesecake and sunshine on a stick, in the form of a Pimm’s ice lolly. Perhaps it would be rude to choose between the two.

We’re reaching peak summer and so is your vegetable garden; it’s time to start thinking about sowing seeds for the winter season to prepare for all those naturally tasting winter crops!

But why so early? For the best results, seeds need to be sown in the late months of summer in order for the plant to establish itself before the colder weather descends on the garden. Once it does, it has been said that the cooler temperatures enhance the taste – and if nothing else, growing crops over the later months of the year can make the garden look more cheerful when the weather dulls down!

So, what vegetables to plant in August?

Thinking ahead, the most productive and fastest-growing crops to grow throughout the autumn/winter are salad leaves. There’s a range of winter salad leaves to choose from, with more variance in flavour than you may think.

It’s time to sow… 

Yummy Supper

Sorrel

A strong, lemony flavour which will produce leaves all year round once established, sorrel can be a great alternative to basil. Why not have a go at sorrel pesto? With a refreshing, zesty aura it works well with nutty flavours such as marcona almonds!

Winter Purslane/Claytonia

Purslane and claytonia become gorgeously flowering plants in the spring and are packed with vitamin C. They also include miner’s lettuce, which is great wilted in a sauté, ready for those cosy autumnal dinners! Alternatively, create thickness in soup with a few handfuls dropped in last minute, or use the delicate blossoms as a gorgeous garnish. The versatility is endless!

Everyone’s favourite! Rocket is a great winter crop that’s less prone to bolting (prematurely running to seed) at this time of year. Growing rocket will keep the summer alive that little bit longer as a favourite to greening up homemade pizzas and peppering up almost any meat or summer dish!

A strong, confident flavour which requires less water than its best friend watercress, but still tastes – and looks – great in sandwiches, salads and soups!

How is Brabantia celebrating this important milestone? 

We first want to thank everybody who has helped us planting these 1 million trees. We didn’t do it alone. Thanks go to WeForest for making it possible, and consumers for their choice to use (our) rotary dryers to dry their laundry naturally. #1.000.000 THANK YOUs! We’ll certainly share our thanks on social media. And to celebrate and remember our 1 millionth tree, we’ve planted a nice tree near our office together with Marie-Noelle Keijzer, CEO of WeForest.

What’s been the highlights of this collaboration so far?

The 10 millionth WeForest tree: we planted it together with WeForest. And now the millionth Brabantia tree. That’s an enormous amount of trees, and we’re very proud about that. Not only because of the trees, but also because of the empowerment of local people.

Why is it so important for Brabantia to (year on year) keep improving your sustainability credentials and collaborations? 

We’re a family company with family values.We want to leave a better world for generations to come. That’s why we have set ourselves a goal: to move to 100% recycling within our generation. By taking it step by step, we believe we can achieve this.

How does it feel knowing that Brabantia’s consumers have made such a difference? 

#1.000.000 THANK YOUs! Consumers have shared that they really like the tree-planting. That feels good and supports us in continuing our efforts towards 100% recycling.

What makes this such a special partnership with WeForest? 

First of all, a ‘laundry tree’ and a ‘real tree’ make a great couple.  WeForest is an inspiring, very professional and dedicated organisation. A pleasure to partner with.

Are there any new ways of living our lives to be kinder to the environment? 

Within your own possibilities, question yourself what you can do yourself and start the doing!

What’s next for Brabantia and WeForest? 

It would be great if we can inspire consumers and companies to join efforts in doing good for our planet. To leave it as a better place for the next generation. We continue our partnership with WeForest: Let’s make it 1,5 million Brabantia trees!
